The Story
The Story
Rwamatamu was founded in 2015 by husband‑and‑wife team Rutaganda Gaston and Mukantwaza Laeticia, who have built a reputation for quality and community‑driven development across Nyamasheke and Mbare. Their work extends beyond processing: they run a Women’s Cooperative in Nyamasheke, providing land, seedlings, and training, and a Youth Association in Mbare that supports 18–35 year‑olds in developing skills and long‑term opportunities in coffee farming.
This washed Red Bourbon comes from smallholder farmers in Mbare, Southern Province, with cherries delivered to Rwamatamu’s Mbare washing station for careful processing. After hand‑sorting, the coffee is pulped and fermented in water for 12–48 hours before being washed and dried on raised beds for 21–22 days, depending on the weather. Once dried, it’s taken to Kigali for milling, grading, and final preparation for export.
The result is a clean, expressive washed profile with notes of apple, pear and malt caramel. This coffee is shaped by a producer deeply invested in both flavour and the future of their community.
